| This multi-talented lady was born and raised in southeastern Alabama. Annie S. Barnes received her college degree in sociology from Shaw University and master’s degree in sociology from Atlanta University. The author earned a semester of anthropology in a National Science Foundation Institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Ph.D. in social anthropology from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Dr. Barnes is a complete family, single mom, and single Dad expert. Annie has balanced forty-two-years of marriage to Bennie Barnes with raising her daughter, Trina Barnes Jones and good times with her granddaughter Gabrielle Jones. The author added more to her life. She states "It was enjoyable teaching, researching, publishing, speaking, and serving on the board of directors of the American Anthropological Association and as the first African American female and second African American president of the Virginia Social Science Association." This author also served as president of the Association of Black Anthropologists of the American Anthropology Association, Norfolk, Virginia chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and the Norfolk, Virginia chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Wives, and member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority national housing committee, Washington, D.C. The author promoted her book, Everyday Racism, on two-hundred radio programs in America and in Montreal and South America (interpreter), 2000-2002. In 2001, Annie Barnes hosted a special series on radio station WALLE 990 for the North American Broadcasting Company, New England, and Judge Hatchett’s televised court program interviewed her to serve as Judge Hatchett’s television counselor. Barnes was guest on the national television Tony Brown’s Journal twice—1979 (Roots) and 2002 (Everyday Racism). ? This Shero has conducted empirical research across a vast amount of territories such as: America and in the American South, Osuwem, Ghana West Africa, the United States Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and worldwide at the Navy Personnel and Research Development Center, San Diego, CA. She has spent more time doing research among African Americans than any other group. Barnes, an experienced researcher and writer, is the author of seven previous books and six are still selling by the publishers and multiple book sellers: Everyday Racism, 2000 published by Sourcebooks in Naples, IL and sold by multiple sellers, including Allyn and Bacon; Research Skills in the Social Sciences published by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, Dubuque, l993; Retention of African-American Males in High School: A Study of African-American Male High School Dropouts, African-American Male Seniors, and White Male Seniors, published by the University Press of America, New York, l992; and Single Parents in Black America , l987, Black Women (l986), The Black Middle Class Family, l985, and Social Science Research Skills, l985, by Wyndham Hall Press, Bristol, Indiana. Dr.Barnes has authored six chapters in books and three are titled African Americans in the South, University of Georgia Press, l992; Women in the South: An Anthropological Perspective, University of Georgia Press, l989; Black Marriage and Family Therapy, Edited by Constance E. Obudho and published by the Greenwood Press; five abstracts in professional journals; and nineteen refereed articles in professional journals. The author edited a special issue of the international journal Urban Anthropology: and Studies of Cultural Systems and World Economic Development (Volume l5, Number 3-4, Fall-Winter, l986). In Virginia, Annie has been a regular contributor to the daily newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot and the weekly newspaper, The New Journal and Guide, and the Hampton Roads television affiliates, ABC, CBS, and NBC, local Public Broadcasting Network, and numerous radio programs, including popular call-in talk shows, done in her office at home and at her local PBS. Dr. Barnes’ picture was featured on the cover of Portfolio magazine (Hampton Roads, Virginia, l988). Inside the issue, she discussed "Race and Economics: The Dilemma of the Black Middle Class." The cover picture, without eyeglasses, was featured a year in a television advertisement collage to attract tourists and advertise the tourist and resort region in which she lives, Southampton Roads, VA (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Newport News, and Hampton). Annie was featured in JET, a John Johnson publication, 1983, when she served as the first African American female president of the Virginia Social Science Association. In 1985, EBONY placed her book, The Black Middle Class Family, on its Book Shelf. John Johnson, a black publishing pioneer, put a face on Barnes nationally Sponsors of her lectures included Norfolk State University, Hampton University, Old Dominion University, South Carolina State College, community colleges, the Moral Rearmament International Conference (representatives from 60 nations), Caux, Switzerland, high school districts, and the Southwestern Bell Corporation, Saint Louis, MO. This magnificent lady was one of the Virginia State Council of Higher Education thirteen l988 Best Teachers of the year in Virginia. With then Virginia Governor Gerald Baliles and Dr. Gordon Davies, chairman of the Virginia State Council of Higher Education, she was a principal at the corporate banquet honoring the recipients. The Virginia State Council of Higher Education selected Barnes to give the acceptance speech on behalf of all recipients and herself. Dr. Barnes has held three teaching positions. First, she was a high school teacher at the then Huntington High School, Newport News Virginia, from l954-l965. Next, she taught anthropology and sociology at the Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia, 1965-1967, and taught anthropology and sociology at the Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia, September, l971 to July, l997. After being hired as eminent anthropology scholar in the Norfolk State University Sociology Department, Barnes retired from that university July l, l997 as Norfolk State University Anthropology and Sociology Professor Emerita to write trade entertaining, engaging, and helpful books to make a difference in people’s lives Dr.Annie S.
